Branches and Rocks in the Night

I fell asleep at about 10pm last night. I was a bit concerned about our watermelon attracting bears, but we went ahead and left it at the river as planned. I slept in the big "host" tent, and Toby stayed in the lovely guest quarters (lower left tent in frame).

Some time in the night I awoke to the sounds of branches breaking just behind my tent. I lay very still and listened. More branches broke and rocks were moved. There is a small creek about six feet from my tent. It sounded like some one or thing was walking in the creek, moving branches and causing rocks to shift.

I was torn between two instincts: 1) lying very still in case Bigfoot was poking around our site and 2) making some godawful noise to scare a bear away. I did nothing. I was too scared to move, I think. The sounds stopped after about ten minutes.

In the morning, our watermelon was untouched; however, so was the bag of lemons I left in the creek just ten feet from my tent. What critter would venture all the way down the creek from the hillside and not take the lemons?

babaLou has reported hearing these sounds occassionally. Tonight I will aim my miniDV cam at the creek and use my remote control to record if i hear sounds.

I must say that I'd be freaking out if I heard something making that kind of noise right behind my tent. :) Glad whatever it was didn't disturb you up close.

Thanks, Marilyn! If you noticed, I moved my brother's tent next to mine last night so he would hear the sounds too...

The night before, I guess when you were hearing the noises, I looked at your live web cams not knowing what they looked like in the day time. It was my first visit to this blog. I now know the three cam views, however on that first night of which I'm reporting I had no idea what the day time picture looked like.....
In your campsite view at night it is totally black except for on the bottom in the middle of the frame was a slightly half oval roundish lighter color with periodically two (2) redish looking eyes. These two (2) red eye types would change to one (1) eye and greenish eyes and one (1) lighter slit like a half closed eye... whatever it was it was turning different ways..
Also, though none of your cam views have a straight 3/4 inch wide tree trunk or straight pole or boulder... one of the views, when useing a large magnifying glass to enlarge the pixels so the difference in the dark lighter area could be seen better, showed this straight shape fairly clearly as a solid object. There was on the upper right side a large oblong indention that was like a shadowed dark area... this too changed it's shape after several frames... I was surprised to seen the daylight cam views to learn there was no such large tree trunk in the middle of the scenery frames!

I forgot to tell you that the tree was in the middle of the frame .... and there is no tree in the middle of either of your scenery cams!

On other thought to consider regarding food that you left out for the Forest People... Most wild animals including humans, will not eat anything that they do not recognise as food.
If the smell of watermelon and lemons are foreign to a Forest Person, they will not attempt to eat the watermelon and/or lemons...
Perhaps you should put food out that the Forest People will recognise... wild yams, wild onions, fish, and other foods that you know they like to eat....
Perhaps you were just seeing if they would eat something new.. ?
Maybe you could ask the Forest Rangers where the wild yams grow..?
It is just a thought....
